Praised as exceedingly interesting and original, a recitalist, guest artist, and chamber musician, pianist Eunmi Ko has been featured in many venues throughout North America, Asia, and Oceania. Recently, she has played in Weill Hall at Carnegie Hall, Chautauqua Music Festival, Rebecca Penneys Piano Festival, Festival Cervantino Internacional in Mexico, Music Center of Christchurch in New Zealand, and Soon-Cheon National University in Korea. Ko is particularly interested in new music and lesser-known repertoire. Her recent recital at Carnegie Hall presented a New York premiere of She rose, and let me in: Scottish Variation and Fugue by John Liberatore, a recent work by Esa-Pekka Salonen and a piano cycle by Josef Suk. Ko recently appeared as a guest artist at the University of Michigan, Eastern Michigan University, Hobart and William Smith Colleges, Lynn University, Rochester Institute of Technology, Spectrum NYC, Union College, Women in Music Festival, CUNY in NYC, St. Petersburg College.
Collaboration has been a very important part of Ko’s career. From 2009 to 2012, Ko and violiinist Sini Virtanen played chamber music of the twentieth and twenty-first century composers through concert series “Music after 1900.” Currently, she is co-founder and co-director of the new music ensemble Strings & Hammers, which has the unusual instrumentation of violin, piano, and double bass. The ensemble explores chamber music repertoire of the twentieth and twenty-first century and commissions works from emerging composers. In 2013, Strings & Hammers gave their inaugural concert sponsored by the Skalny Center for the Polish and Central European Studies at the University of Rochester, playing music by Krzysztof Penderecki to celebrate his 80th birthday. In 2014, the ensemble commissioned works for violin, double bass, and piano from five different composers. “The Premiere Project” presented music of Alessandro Annunziata, David Jenssen, Seunghee Lee, John Liberatore, and Gilad Rabinovitch. This year, Strings & Hammer has featured as guest ensemble at the University of Pittsburgh at Bradford, the New Music Consortium at University of South Florida, and the Venture Compound. In 2016, their new partners are composer Fabio Massimo Capogrosso, Michael Frazier, David Liptak, Ciro Scotto, and Baljinder Sekhon. In 2011, she was Assistant Director for the Women in Music Festival in Rochester, New York. This led her into collaboration with composer, Hilary Tann, the fruits of which include her first commercial CD (“a fine CD and an excellent introduction to Tann’s musical world for those unfamiliar with it.” Fanfare Magazine), released in 2014 by Centaur Records, showcasing Tann’s solo and chamber works. In 2015 fall and 2016 spring, she will be working with McCormick Ensemble for a CD project. Ko and Robert McCormick co-commissioned concerti for Piano and Percussion from Matt Barber, Seunghee Lee, John Liberatore, Ciro Scotto, and Baljinder Sekhon. Premiere concerts will take place in the USF concert hall.
Ko received her Master of Music and Doctor of Musical Arts degrees from Eastman School of Music. Her primary teachers have included Ick Choo Moon and Rebecca Penneys. She has taught at the Finger Lakes Community College, Canandaigua NY and Performing Arts Institute, Wyoming PA. She is on the faculty at the Rebecca Penneys Piano Festival. In 2014, Ko joined the faculty at the University of South Florida as Visiting Assistant Professor of Piano. In 2015 fall, she begins her new appointment as Assistant Professor of Piano at USF.
