An Evening with Salman Rushdie
Please note, this event has expired.
Oxford Exchange and Tampa Theatre collaborate again for a special OE Spotlight conversation with Writers’ Guild Award-winning, New York Times Bestselling author, Salman Rushdie, in celebration of the release of his new book, Quichotte.
Quichotte is an ageing traveling salesman obsessed with the “unreal real” of TV who falls in impossible love with a queen of the screen and sets off to drive across America on a picaresque quest to prove himself worthy of her hand; accompanied, in the passenger seat, by the son he has imagined into being. In Rushdie’s masterpiece, Quichotte’s story is also the story of a deranged time, the “Age of Anything Can Happen,” and deals, along the way, with father-son relationships, sibling quarrels, unforgivable things, racism, the opioid crisis, cyber-spies, science fiction, the story of the Author who created Quichotte, and the end of the world.
Salman Rushdie is the author of thirteen previous novels—Luka and the Fire of Life, Grimus, Midnight’s Children (for which he won the Booker Prize and the Best of the Booker), Shame, The Satanic Verses, Haroun and the Sea of Stories, The Moor’s Last Sigh, The Ground Beneath Her Feet, Fury, Shalimar the Clown, The Enchantress of Florence, Two Years, Eight Months, and Twenty-Eight Nights, and The Golden House—and one collection of short stories: East, West. He has also published four works of nonfiction—Joseph Anton, The Jaguar Smile, Imaginary Homelands, and Step Across This Line—and coedited two anthologies, Mirrorwork and Best American Short Stories 2008. He is a member of the American Academy of Arts and Letters and a Distinguished Writer in Residence at New York University. A former president of PEN American Center, Rushdie was knighted in 2007 for services to literature.
Tickets are $42 for a single admission ticket and $52 for a double admission, and are available at the historic Franklin Street Box Office or online ($1 service fee applies). All ticket packages include a pre-signed hardcover copy of Quichotte.
