Bremner Benedict – Hidden Waters/ Desert Springs, An Uncertain Future January – April 2021

TAMPA, Fla. — The Florida Museum of Photographic Arts will exhibit Hidden Waters / Desert Springs, An Uncertain Future by Bremner Benedict, from January – April 2021. This exhibit showcases the beauty and delicacy of the natural springs in the Western American desserts at a time, where climate change and human interactions could destroy these fragile ecosystems forever.

Bremner Benedict was a travel photographer for 20 years and a graphic designer for the Museum of Northern Arizona before she started creating photography projects to raise awareness about climate change and its effect on the future of our planet. For Hidden Waters/Desert Springs, An Uncertain Future, Benedict documented and researched natural springs in the Mojave, Sonoran, Chihuahaun, Great Basin Deserts, and the Colorado Plateau. Natural springs are earth’s timekeepers, derived from the ancient seas of deep time to yesterday’s rainfall. While it is often treated as though fresh water is an infinite resource, it is, in fact, limited. Natural springs come from thousands of years old water beneath the land. Arid lands with low and unpredictable rainfall are inherently fragile, making their aquifers susceptible to overuse and long-term drought. The critical importance of these waters and their ecologies in the face of climate change and population pressures is gravely under-recognized, leaving them more susceptible to anthropogenic damage such as dredging, boxing, piping, dynamiting, rechanneling, and draining. Their long-term survival is precarious. In this exhibition Benedict combines beautiful delicate landscapes with research that shows the hard truth about humanity’s failure to protect these ecosystems.

Hidden Waters/Desert Springs, An Uncertain Future will be on view during museum operating hours and is included in the general admission fee. To learn more about this exhibition and other programming at the museum, visit  www.fmopa.org
