CUBAN SANGWICH SHOW OPENS APRIL 1 (Spelling is intentional–honoring the Spanish way of pronouncement)
The Artists and Writers Group presents another whimsical, tongue-in-cheek, Cuban Sangwich Show, April 1-19. This mini-feast honors all things Tampa. Our motto: “All Tampa. All Art. No Mayo.” The numerous happenings include visual arts, film, poetry, theatre, cuisine and history lessons. All events will be held at Grownman Brand Studios, 6412 North Central Avenue, Tampa 33604.
April 1: TAMPA FOOL’S PARTY. Opening Night Celebration! Tampa-themed visual arts exhibition. 6:00-10:00 pm. $5.00. Includes ticket for a refreshment and tasty nibbles.
*Exhibition runs through April 19. Gallery opens to public at 6:00 pm April 2-3-8-10-13-14-15-17 until ticketed event begins. Gallery opens weekends at 11:00 am and is free until event begins.
April 2: A GOOD SHORT LIFE by Tampa filmmaker Stewart Lippe. 7:30-10:00 pm. New documentary about colorful Tampa journalist Dudley Clendinen and his struggle with ALS. Discussion follows the screening. $5.00
April 3: FIRST NITE-Seminole Heights. Arts exhibition/music/readings. 6-11 pm. $5.00
April 4: SATURDAY POETRY: TAMPA. 7:30 pm. Readings by Melissa Fair, Silvia Curbelo, Linda Alexander, R.J. Nelson and Sarah Myhre. $5.00
April 5: MAKING THE HISTORIC TAMPA CUBAN SANDWICH. 2:00-5:00 pm. Acclaimed “Cuban Sandwich Expert” Professor Dr. Q. U. Bunn and illustrious guests Jorge Acosta, Ronny Elliott, Yoli Capin share tall Tampa tales. Quality ingredients will be provided to attendees who will learn how to make (and eat) their own “homemade Cuban sangwich.” Limited seating. April 8: TAMPA AUTHENTIC. “Chewing the Fat: the Surprising History of Swine in Florida.” 7:30 pm. Presentation by Tampa City Council member, Ms. Yoli Capin. Free
April 10: ARTISTS TALK ABOUT ART. 6:00-10:00 pm. Exhibiting artists are invited to share their motivations, techniques and philosophy regarding their art work on display. Free
April 11: (Sat) SPOKEN WORD SLAM. 8:00 pm. Poet Giddy Perez and her Slam team. $5.00
April 12: YUM-YUM GARLIC FEAST. 2:00 pm. Film critic Bob Ross discusses Tampa-born Les Blank’s oeuvre as a documentarian with excerpts screened. A special homage to Mr. Blank’s GARLIC IS AS GOOD AS TEN MOTHERS with garlic-based dishes by home cooks and chefs. $10.00 (free if you bring a garlic-based dish to share)
April 13-14-15: (Monday-Tuesday-Wednesday) THE ROOT by Mark E. Leib. Staged reading by the devil himself, Glenn Gover. 7:30 pm. Discussion will follow performance. $5.00
April 17: THE TAMPA SOUND AND ITS INFLUENCE ON ROCK N’ ROLL. Presentation by Ray Villadonga with musicians involved in Tampa’s 50‘s and 60’s music scene. 7:30 pm. $5.00

April 19: ALL IN THIS TEA. 2:00 pm. Excepts from Tampa-born filmmaker Les Blank’s doc about the search for the finest handmade teas in the world. Don Haynes will demonstrate proper methods for making quality tea and provide tasting samples. $5.00
The Artists and Writers Group has been creating art havoc in Tampa since the late 1970s, including 13 years of the Artists and Writers balls, Tabloid Magazine, Ground Zero Performance Gallery, Still and Moving Gallery, Homemade Music Symposium, and Deep Carnivale: A Celebration of Words. The Cuban Sangwich Show is sponsored by Grownman Brand Studios, Atlantic and Pacific Productions and the numerous participating artists and writers.
