Greenwood Furniture with Jason Lonon
This is a comprehensive introduction to crafting greenwood furniture.
In times past, milking stools saw benches, and a host of other furniture were built on the framework of a thick slab seat holding the legs in round mortices.
Come and learn this traditional craft of greenwood furniture making with Jason Lonon, an Appalachian craftsman from North Carolina.
In this introductory class, you will get to build several forms of simple seating from the three-legged milking stool to four-legged benches and stools using many different kinds of tools – both historic and modern. You’ll work with both green and dry wood and understand how you can harvest your own materials in the future.
We’ll cover a lot of ground while working on several different projects, and in the process, you gain a wide range of skills:
Processing green wood fresh from the forest
Making a tenon to fit a round hole
Making cylindrical and tapered mortices
Basic hand planing technique
You will also learn how to use many of the traditional tools of furniture making that have been around for centuries.
Brace & bit
Jack planes & Chisels
Drawknifes & Reamers
All of these tools will be available, so you won’t need to purchase any of them. If you do have them, feel free to bring them with you.
This class is geared for woodworkers of all skill levels who want to try staked furniture but haven’t taken the plunge yet. Discover how simple and satisfying this historic style of construction is, and why it is enjoying a resurgence in popularity. This is not a class where strength is needed, so as long as you can comfortably…..???
Jason is also an accomplished toolmaker and we are going to ask him to make some of his stock available to you during class. His tools often sell out immediately that they become available, so it’s not something we can guarantee.
