Spanish Lyric Theatre Presents: La del Manojo de Rosas
When Don Daniel’s daughter, Ascensión, walks into his flower shop, every man who’s in the vicinity turns his head. There’s the mechanic, Joaquín; the waiter, Espasa; and the dashing pilot, Ricardo. Each has his own qualities, be it good looks, wealth, a way with words, or a really sexy mustache, and each sets to work using those qualities to try to win the girl. But Ascensión does not see herself as a prize to be won—she’s determined to marry a man of her own class, to not be toyed with or tricked into love. What follows, then, is a musical farce that not only skewers love, courtship, and intellectualism, but also celebrates them.
Of course, such operatic dexterity is typical of Pablo Sorozábal, the Basque-Spanish composer behindLa del Manojo de Rosas. His wit and orchestration pervaded all of his more than 20 zarzuelas without undercutting the melancholy nostalgia that so often characterizes the genre. But La del Manojo de Rosas does more than draw laughs—the piece also paints a portrait of what life was like in Madrid just before the Spanish Civil War.
