Learn How to Build an Heirloom Desk with Nancy Hiller

Make an arts and craft style writing desk with Nancy Hiller in this week long class. A great woodworking project to extend your handtool and machine skills.

Heirloom Desk
The classic English desk functions well for a laptop or as a writing desk. As a gift for a loved one, or as a part of your office its combines traditional joinery with modern-day building techniques and will last for generations.

It is a great project to get your teeth into after taking a Beginner Woodworking, Handtool and/or Table Making class.  It’s really going to help bring everything you’ve learned together in a single project.

Inspired by a once widely-known English manufacturer’s designs for bedroom washstands, this desk incorporates the signature ring-turned feet and curved aprons of the Harris Lebus furniture company, but there is plenty of opportunity for variations that suit your style –   You might like a more contemporary style, or a mid-century modern, or even a clean-lined shaker style.

We will keep the overall dimensions and the drawer but most of the other elements can be modified.

The techniques you’ll learn, form a solid foundation for a variety of furniture –tables, chests of drawers, and more–using a mix of machine and hand-cut joinery.

You will also come away with a handsome desk and a useful piece for your office or home. There are a few design variants that will be discussed in class, and the desk build can refocus s many of the stylistic aspects of A&C – such as the corbels.
