Make a Bike - Ride A Tree

This class will teach you the process to design, shape, bond, align, and ride a wood bicycle. Not just a pretty showpiece, but something you can ride.

Learn to build a wood bike!

 How do you go about building the ultimate combination of form and function? Build a wood bicycle.

This class will teach you the process required to design, shape, bond, align, and ride a wood bicycle. Not just a pretty showpiece, but something that you can ride and enjoy for years to come. A wood bicycle combines the best of design and craftsmanship requiring a variety of woodworking techniques and craftsmanship, all of which will be taught in this class.

Chris Connor of Connor Wood Bicycles, is one of the original creators of the sport wood bicycle. A bike that is meant to be ridden hard, but is equally beautiful. Chris, who has been building wood bicycles since 2012, will lead you through his process showing his many tips and techniques for designing and making a bike that will stand up to miles of riding and will be a joy every time you ride.

You will learn:

Bicycle frame building terminology
Bicycle geometry basics
Working with adhesives
Wood bending and lamination
Jig and mold making
Frame alignment
Bicycle assembly
How to ride a wood bike (the really fun part)

This 7-day course will provide you with all the necessary knowledge, parts, and materials to build your bike. A selection of properly thicknessed blanks will get you started, along with all the templates, jigs, and alignment tricks to make your bike from start to finish in this class. Bike components, such as the wheels, tires, handlebars, cranks, etc. will also be provided so you and everyone in the class can assemble their bike and wrap up the course with a bike ride together.

The class will revolve around each participant, building a standard, medium-sized frame. Templates will be provided to the class so that each bike will fit most riders sized from about 5’5″ to 6’0″. For the course, your bike will be built up as a single-speed cruiser bike with balloon tires and cruiser bars. However, this frame will be built around one of Connor’s designs that features disc brakes, 135mm rear hub spacing and a flexible geometry that will allow you to later customize this frame if you choose by adding a derailleur gear-set, belt drive and even different tires and handlebars so it can be fitted for light trail riding, touring or commuting.
