See this exhibition of work by the artist collective Separate Checks at Gallery221@HCC!
Gallery221@HCC presents Narrative Nowhere, an exhibition of work by the artist collective Separate Checks. This exhibition will be on display November 2–December 10, 2020 in Gallery221@HCC by appointment only. A virtual reception will be held on Thursday, November 5, 2020 from 6:00–7:00 p.m. on Zoom.
Narrative Nowhere in Gallery221@HCC encourages viewers to take part in viewing a wide array of artwork from artists representing various backgrounds and narratives. In response to the tumultuous events of 2020, the artists of Separate Checks will showcase work which allows viewers to reflect on their own narrative by accessing the various stories on display in the exhibition. Narrative Nowhere includes photographs produced from across the country, video works that explore personal histories, and sculptures that physically conjure up the past.
Separate Checks is a collective of 12 artists based in Tampa, FL. The collective was formed in the summer of 2018 by Katelyn Montagna and Adam Mathieu in an effort to reignite a creative community among friends. A majority of the members attended the University of South Florida’s College of The Arts. It was in this academic setting that they discovered how inspiring it can be for one’s own art practice to be surrounded by engaged artists who share a common goal.
The name of the collective comes from a group show in which some of the members participated. The main appeal of the name is that it speaks to how an artist collective functions in an exhibition: one shared space with many distinct voices.
Featured artists: McKinna Anderson, Aaron Castillo, Krista Darling, Jon Dorofy, Anna Dunwody, Nabil Harb, Adam Mathieu, Katelyn Montagna, Andres Ramirez, Erika Schnur, Kristy Summerson, Jessica Thornton.
