The Last Tree (2020)

1h 38m / Not Rated / Drama NOW AVAILABLE TO STREAM AT HOME! This is an arthouse theatrical exclusive, not available on other streaming platforms.

The Last Tree is the semi-autobiographical story of Femi (played as a child by newcomer Tai Golding), a British boy of Nigerian heritage who, after being fostered in rural Lincolnshire, moves to inner-city London to live with his birth mother. In his teens, Femi (Sam Adewunmi) struggles with the culture and values of his new environment. He must decide which path to adulthood he wants to take, and what it means to be a young black man in London during the early ‘00s. Going back home to Nigeria with his mum to find his Nigerian roots will help adolescent Femi find grounding and hope for a better future.

Sundance favorite and winner of a “Most Promising Newcomer” award for Sam Adewunmi at the 2019 British Independent Film Awards, The Last Tree “thoughtfully alternates universal adolescent insecurities with urgently specific minority politics – filtered through a first-person perspective that itself oscillates between furious clarity and vivid confusion.” (Variety)
