In the historic cigar factories of Tampa and Ybor City, lectores de tabaqueres were men who read aloud to the workers as they rolled cigars. UT’s MFA in Creative Writing program named its Lectores series in honor of this connection between literature and the city’s history. Each January and June, the program hosts celebrated visiting writers, poets, editors, screenwriters, and other artists who give public performances from their works. Read about upcoming participants at www.ut.edu/mfacw/lectores.
On January 4, we welcome non-fiction writer Sarah Perry. Her memoir After the Eclipse was named a New York Times Book Review Editors’ Choice, a Poets & Writers Notable Nonfiction Debut, and a Barnes and Noble Discover Great New Writers pick. Perry is the recipient of the 2018 Betty Berzon Emerging Writer Award and a fellowship from the Edward F. Albee Foundation.
