Morean Arts Center
The mission of the Morean Arts Center is to connect people with art through innovative, community-oriented art and art education and to contribute to the economic development of the region. The Morean offers over 75 studio art classes and workshops per session, mounts 15 – 20 contemporary art exhibitions each year, reaches out to at-risk youth through several programs, conducts special events, hosts summer and winter arts camps, programs early childhood education programs in its Bank of America Children’s Learning Center, runs one of the Southeast’s leading ceramics programs at the Morean Arts Center for Clay located at the Historic Train Station, and has recently opened the Glass Studio & Hot Shop at our main facility and the Chihuly Collection presented by the Morean Arts Center on Beach Drive in downtown St. Petersburg — the first permanent collection of Dale Chihuly’s stunning artwork dedicated solely to the artist in a facility designed specifically for that purpose.
The Morean Arts Center, with roots dating back to 1917 as the Art Club of St. Petersburg, focuses on an innovative, community-oriented approach to art and art education. Our classes and outreach programs are designed to bring out the artist in all of us. We offer adult programs, kids’ programs, family programs, early childhood programs, and summer camp programs, attracting beginners and advanced students alike.
The Morean touches the lives of thousands of youth —many of whom are at risk—through our primary outreach programs, KidVentures and Word & Image. Our exhibitions bring contemporary art created by local, regional and national artists to the community in virtually all visual mediums. These artists include Jasper Johns, Duncan McClellan, Allison Massari, Peter Max, Babs Reingold and Jun Kaneko—to name a few. The Morean Arts Center for Clay moved to a renovated space at the Historic Train Station in 2009. It has allowed for a three-fold expansion of our clay program with more classes, more space and more equipment. And the Bank of America Children’s Learning Center provides a hands-on learning environment for kids of all ages and abilities.
Our programming doesn’t stop there.
