Alan Metzger is a graduate of the Art Institute of Pittsburgh. He has worked in the art and advertising profession most of his life and his work has been recognized for excellence in art contests and in the Addy awards. He grew up in Pittsburgh, PA and lived in Shreveport, LA for many years before moving to South Florida in 1984. Alan now devotes his time to painting. He works in oil and acrylics and his style is typically impressionistic though that style is ever evolving.
Movement and insightful cropping have become “trade marks” of his work. Rather than attempting to paint an entire scene, he has begun to focus tightly on a key detail or decisive moment to create impact while using pallet knife and brush strokes, spatters and drips to generate the action. In his painting of a single wave you can almost hear the roar of the ocean. There is a vibration to his paintings that seem to engage the other senses. Alan’s work, like musical overtones, ring clear and clean and energize the soul of the viewer.
In Nov. 2013, Alan entered the International Polo Club of Palm Beach 2014 Commemorative Poster Competition. His winning entry titled Polo Rumble gives an intriguing view of the sport. In this painting you can practically feel the pounding of hooves as they strike the turf. This international recognition has motivated him to add more equestrian works to his portfolio.
Most recently he won Best of Show and First place at the Strawberry Festival Art competition. Also honorable mention at the North Tampa Arts League’s membership show held at the Carrollwood Cultural Center in April for his painting tilted Festive Time. He was also honored with a Best of Show at the “Out of Towners” show at the Studios of Cocoa Beach for his piece titled Beaufort Marina, and was selected as NTAL’s featured artist for his entry Run Free, a 40” x 16” oil on gallery wrapped canvas. Who wouldn’t love the free spirit depicted in this uniquely cropped painting of wild horses?
Alan’s work has been shown in Tarpon Springs, FL, Art Works, St Petersburg, FL and galleries in Charleston and Beaufort South Carolina.
