ARTicles ~ Leslie Curran Gallery presents THE TEMPEST & THE TEAPOT: Ummarid Eitharong & Robert Lawarre III in conjunction with St Pete’s 2nd Saturday ArtWalk.
The highly anticipated exhibition of UMMARID EITHARONG & ROBERT LAWARRE III opens at our new exhibition space, the Leslie Curran Gallery, just three doors down from our flagship showroom, ARTicles, on Saturday, December 12th, 6-9pm.
Ranging from 6 inches to 6 feet, UMMARID “TONY” EITHARONG’s abstract works on paper are sophisticated examples of color field painting, with exquisitely balanced compositions utilizing a bold color palette and a variety of mark-making techniques. When approached and viewed in close detail, the apparent harmony of the whole gives way to a chaos of subtle marks and signals. More celebratory than cerebral, this body of work reflects an exciting and upbeat period in Eitharong’s accomplished artistic career.
From an early age, ROBERT LAWARRE enjoyed working on cars, a family tradition that started back in the 1960’s with a dirt sprint car and an Indy team, and later a stockcar race team. References to the automotive industry often appear on his ceramic work in the form of riveting, nuts and bolts, casting marks and upholstery stitching.
Lawarre’s true education started as he began work as a “Teaching Artist” in summer camps and public schools in central Florida. It was this interaction with kids that inspired the youthful mindset of his work. While Robert’s mechanical and fabrication skills continue to influence his unique visual language, it is the playful exploration of materials, techniques, and forms that is at the core of what he does. Lawarre’s approach to everything art related can be summed up as having “Serious Fun.”
EITHARONG has been a mainstay and multiple Best in Show award winner in fine art festivals around the country for more than 30 years, attracting the attention of art enthusiasts, connoisseurs, and collectors alike. In 2009, he was recognized for his accomplishments with a major exhibition and the aptly named Enduring Excellence Award from the Museum of Florida Art in Deland. Since that time, he has continued his prolific studio practice and impressive art fair schedule, creating an expansive body of work that reflects his own personal and spiritual evolution.
LAWARRE started working in clay in 1990, completing his AA degree at Valencia Community College in 1997 and BFA in Ceramics at the University of Central Florida in 2002. After completing his education, he began teaching ceramics and sculpture to young artists in Central Florida while maintaining a rigorous studio and exhibition practice. In 2015, Robert moved his home and studio to Memphis, Tennessee to pursue his work full-time.
Robert’s work has been displayed at galleries and museums nationally and internationally, totaling more than 130 shows in the last 9 years. His international exposure, including publications and residencies, extends through the USA, Canada, China, Korea, Taiwan, Austria, Croatia, Italy, France, Germany, Slovenia, and England. He has earned 33 national and international awards since 2006.
THE TEMPEST & THE TEAPOT opens on the evening of December 12th, 6-9pm and continues through January 2nd, 2016. For more information, contact the gallery at 727-898-6061.
